Tests of General Relativity at Large Distances and Dark Matter

چکیده
The most simple observed cases of gravitational lensing of distant quasars and galaxies by galaxies and clusters of galaxies are used to test Einstein’s theory of General Relativity and Newtonian Gravity over galactic and intergalactic distances. They extend the distance range over which Newton-Einstein Gravity has been tested by 10 orders of magnitude. Although the precision of the tests are far from the precision of the solar system tests of EGR and those from pulsar timing in close binary systems, they confirm quite accurately the validity of Einstein’s General Relativity and its weak field limit, Newtonian Gravity, over galactic and intergalactic distances and the existence of large quantities of dark matter in galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Future observations can improve the accuracy of the tests and reduce the possibilities for

Tests of General Relativity on Astrophysical Scales
While tested to a high level of accuracy in the Solar system, general relativity is under the spotlight of both theoreticians and observers on larger scales, mainly because of the need to introduce dark matter and dark energy in the cosmological model. This text reviews the main tests of general relativity focusing on the large scale structure and more particularly weak lensing. The complementa...
متن کاملBi-metric Gravity and " Dark Matter "
We present a bi-metric theory of gravity containing a length scale of galactic size. For distances less than this scale the theory satisfies the standard tests of General Relativity. For distances greater than this scale the theory yields an effective gravitational constant much larger than the locally observed value of Newton's constant. The transition from one regime to the other through the ...
متن کاملA Parameterized Post-Friedmann Framework for Modified Gravity
We develop a parameterized post-Friedmann (PPF) framework which describes three regimes of modified gravity models that accelerate the expansion without dark energy. On large scales, the evolution of scalar metric and density perturbations must be compatible with the expansion history defined by distance measures. On intermediate scales in the linear regime, they form a scalar-tensor theory wit...
متن کاملAnti-gravity and/or dark matter contributions from massive gravity
Recently, the static spherically symmetric solution of the gravitational field equations have been found in theories describing massive graviton with spontaneous breaking of the Lorentz invariance [1]. These solutions, which show off two integration constants instead of one in General Relativity, are discussed. They are candidates for modified black holes provided they are stable against small ...
متن کاملDark matter and non-Newtonian gravity from General Relativity on a stringy background
An exact solution of Einstein’s field equations for a static spherically symmetric medium with a radially boost invariant energy-momentum tensor is presented. In the limit of an equation of state corresponding to a distribution of radially directed strings there is a 1/r correction to Newton’s force law. At large distances and small accelerations this law coincides with the phenomenological for...
